Joe Clark- General Manager jclark@jackalopes.org More than a decade ago, he was behind the bench as the Jackalopes were "born" and professional hockey came to the Permian Basin. As the Jackalopes enter their 15th season at the Ector County Coliseum, Joe Clark begins his fourth season as the team's General Manager as the franchise heads into its inaugural season as a member of the North American Hockey League. The former Jacks Head Coach was re-introduced to the Permian Basin in January of 2008, this time with a new title and a new mission. Clark, who was born and raised in Augusta, Maine, returned to west Texas after an eight-year absence, most recently serving as a scout for the NHL's New York Islanders, as well as coaching in their minor league system in the ECHL. From 2008 until 2011, the Jackalopes served as a AA affiliate of the Islanders and were instrumental in getting several Odessa players opportunities in both the AHL and NHL. Clark, 50, was instrumental in getting the Jackalopes off the ground in 1997, and helped the organization to back-to-back "WPHL Franchise Of The Year" awards. Just three seasons ago, in his first full term as the Jacks GM, Odessa was named the CHL's "Most Improved Franchise" and were also recognized as the league's top team in community relations. The Jacks won that award again the following season. Clark also spent ten years as a head coach in Europe, and used his deep contacts overseas to bring in skilled players like Sami Laine - who remains the only 50-goal scorer in team history. Prior to his days in Europe, Clark started his coaching career as an assistant at the University of Maine, one of the nation's top NCAA programs. During his days at Maine, Clark helped the Black Bears to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 1987, as well as the school's first Frozen Four appearance in 1988. Outside of hockey, Clark put his journalism skills to use and served as an editor in the sports department of the Omaha World Herald for four years, as well as the Lewiston Sun and Kennebec Journal in his home state. During his first season as the Jacks' coach, Clark met then Odessa College women's basketball coach Stephie Thomas at a charity basketball game between the two teams.
